Hiking Adventure in the Heart of Corcovado National Park
Before we got on the boat, we could already feel the spirit of adventure. As we waited for the rest of our group at the Bahia parking lot near the famous “whale tail,” nature was already giving us a show. Playful white-faced capuchin monkeys swung between the trees, a sloth lazily clung to a branch, and a crocodile lay motionless at the water’s edge like a silent guardian of the mangrove. This exciting mix of wildlife gave us the perfect adrenaline rush to get on the boat with our eyes wide open, eager for what awaited us.
The boat ride: a first encounter with wildlife
As soon as our boat ride began, nature continued to surprise us. We saw two green sea turtles mating on the water’s surface during the ride. The moment was fleeting: sensing our presence, they quickly disappeared beneath the waves, leaving us only a glimpse of their majestic forms. After an hour and a half of sailing through the turquoise waters of the Pacific, making a quick stop at Drake Bay to pick up our guide, we finally reached our destination: the untamed paradise of Corcovado National Park.
Rules of Nature: Respect Nature
Upon arrival, the message was clear: conservation is top priority. No plastic containers or disposable water bottles are allowed. Everything must be reusable, reminding us we are mere guests in this pristine sanctuary. Safety rules are strict: only closed-toe shoes are permitted, as the park is home to snakes, insects, and other wild creatures.
On the trail of the puma
Excited and nervous at the thought of encountering a jaguar or puma, we finally ventured into the jungle. We chose a trail known for its high chances of spotting pumas, hoping for a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with one of America’s most elusive felines. As we crossed a river, our patience was rewarded: in the wet sand, we discovered the tiny footprints of a puma cub, undeniable proof of its presence in the area. This find fueled our excitement and prompted us to continue our search with even greater enthusiasm.
Throughout our hike, the rich biodiversity of Corcovado surrounded us. We encountered several species of spiders, spider monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, and a dazzling array of vibrantly colored birds. However, the big cat remained elusive, leaving us with a lingering sense of mystery and anticipation.
A taste for more
After hours of hiking through the jungle, we were ready to replenish our energy with a traditional Costa Rican meal. The authentic flavors of the local cuisine gave us the energy we needed to reflect on our adventure.
At the end of the day, although we didn’t get to see a puma in person, the experience was unforgettable. Corcovado left us wanting more, and one thing became certain: we will be back. Because in this wild corner of Costa Rica, every visit hides a new story waiting to be told.
